Salt Lake City, Sept. 1, 2006—Dogs of Salt Lake City & Park City, by Mary Ann Parkinson and Robert Eckman, will be released at a doggie party at The King’s English on Saturday, October 7 at 2 p.m. The event will benefit Rocky Mountain Rescue Dogs. Rescue dogs will “speak” at the event and paw-print books. (Humans only are invited to attend this event; other events in parks will include dogs.) The King’s English is located at 1511 South, 1500 East in Salt Lake City.
From rugged rescue dogs to imaginary purse pooches, Utah dogs have it made: Romps in fresh powder in the winter and in cool mountain streams in the summer, dog-friendly parks and canyons, and even plenty of pampering spas for city dogs.
Dogs of Salt Lake City & Park City celebrates the area’s finest dogs through smart and sassy dog interviews (via Pooch Questionnaires, in the style of Vanity Fair’s Proust Questionnaire), which will leave readers panting for more.
Authors Mary Ann Parkinson and Robert Eckman interview Jake, a search and rescue dog who volunteered at the World Trade Center after 9-11; BIFF, a film production assistant who wears hiking boots and carries a camera; MIR, a companion dog to an AIDS activist; and many more amazing (or simply cute) dogs.
Some of the dogs were reluctant to be interviewed; others were sic’cing their publicists on us! Through careful vetting, the authors selected dogs representing a wide range of breeds and talents. The authors’ toss-the-ball interview techniques allowed them to coax intimate answers to questions rarely asked of dogs, such as how they feel about cats and with whom they would share their chow.
The book also celebrates the humans who love and care for dogs and, who, in many cases, rescued them from abusive owners. Mindy Badovinatz, a Veterinarian Technician, adopted Rottikki, a drug-dealer’s Rottweiler who had been shot three times; Christy Edwards and Pat Evans saved Max, a dog serving a life sentence for “lamb-slaughter.” Other humans in the book include author and political cartoonist Pat Bagley and his cheeky Balto, Senator Scott McCoy and Parker, and Attorney Dave Richards and his heroic 9-11 rescue dog, Cowboy.
Dogs of Salt Lake City & Park City also includes the best resource guide available to local dog parks, hikes, goody stores, spas, and other doggie-friendly spots.
Author Mary Ann Parkinson says that she and co-author Robert Eckman compiled this book “because of our love of dogs and our desire to support local non-profit dog groups, including Rocky Mountain Rescue Dogs.” The authors are donating all of their royalties to nonprofits benefiting dogs.
Rocky Mountain Rescue Dogs, Inc. is a service organization that provides qualified dog teams to to help locate missing persons and provide first aid, including in situations involving wilderness, avalanches, water and disasters.
