Artists, writers, curators, art dealers, and scholars came to Books Inc. on 4th Street in Berkeley on May 2 to hear Susan Vogel talk about Becoming Pablo O'Higgins.
Eric Schultheis of Books Inc. said: "A fascinating mixture of art, working class politics/communism, and revolutionary history. This was a great author event match for our Berkeley location, and seemed to have resonance for our studio art community. Perhaps the conjunction of May Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Arizona SB 1070 had something to do with the good turnout ...."

Susan Vogel, author of Becoming Pablo O'Higgins, was the featured speaker at a donors' event and press conference launching the opening of an exhibition of Pablo O'Higgins's art at the University of Utah's Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) in February, 2010.
The UMFA was one of the first institutions in Utah to acknowledge the importance of and collect works by Pablo O'Higgins, a Utah native who became an important muralist of the "second generation" of Mexican muralists who painted the walls of Mexico City in the 1920s and '30s.
Vogel was interviewed by Reinaldo Escobar, of El Observador, who wrote, "Even though [O'Higgins] was North American he came to identify fully with the soul of the Mexican and gained an incredible connection with the ordinary peasant from south of the border." El Observador, February 21, 2010.
César Arrendondo, writing for Ahora Utah, interviewed Vogel for his article "A Painter Endeared to Mexico." Ahora Utah, February 25, 2010.
Dan Nailen interviewed Vogel and wrote about O'Higgins in Salt Lake Magazine. "They call him ... Pablo," Salt Lake Magazine, February 19, 2010.
The exhibition of 28 of O'Higgins's works on paper runs through September 18, 2010.
Susan Vogel gave a gallery talk to junior high and high school students participating in an after-school arts program through the Mestizo Institute of Culture and Art (MICA) in Salt Lake City, directed by artist Ruby Chacon. On March 5, MICA held a printmaking workshop led by Oakland, California-based printmaker Favianna Rodgriguez at Salt Lake City's Mestizo Coffeehouse and Gallery. Rodriguez said that her work is inspired by the Taller de Gráfica Popular, co-founded by Pablo O'Higgins in 1937.
On April 3, Susan Vogel gave a talk about Pablo O'Higgins to 40 docents-in-training for the Utah Museum of Fine Arts's upcoming exhibit, Las Artes de Mexico.
(Salt Lake City-August 9, 2008) Andrea Moore-Emmett, author of God's Brothel, as been selected as this year's recipient of the Excellence in Media Award, given by the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma. The award is given annually by this organization and the Leadership Council on Child Abuse & Interpersonal Violance, both nonprofit organizations "dedicated to increasing awareness about the problems of interpersonal violence of all forms in our society."
The groups state, "Each year we recognize the top one or two media presentations that we feel have contributed the most toward raising social awareness about child abuse and its potential for causing long lasting pain. This year we are pleased to recognize you for your book entitled 'God's Brothel' and for your research on the A&E documentary 'Inside Polygamy.' We believe you have performed a valuable service by exposing the often ignored problem of the exploitation of children and women in polygamous religious cults."
Moore-Emmett will receive the award at the organization's 13th International Conference on Family Violence, Abuse and Trauma in San Diego on September 14-17, 2008.
Pince-Nez Press, the book's publisher, says that the book is one of the company's best sellers, "mainly outside of Utah where peple are horrified by Mormon fundamentalist polygamy. In Utah, people are conflicted on this topic since many Utahns who have been widowed then remarried in the Mormon Church, including three top Mormon officials, will be polygamists in Mormon heaven, says Susan Vogel, Publisher. "We are very proud of Andrea."
(San Francisco-August 9, 2008) Authors Betsy Little and Paula Molligan will speak about private school admission at Books Inc. on Chestnut Street on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 7 p.m. Little and Molligan are authors of the new fourth edition of Private High Schools of the San Francisco Bay Area and of Private K-8 Schools of San Francisco & Marin. A former admission director and former head of school, Little and Molligan have assisted more than 1,000 Bay Area families in private school admission.
God's Brothel Tops Amazon Bestseller Lists
(Salt Lake City-Nov. 15, 2007) Andrea Moore-Emmett's indictment of Mormon fundamentalist polygamy, God's Brothel, has topped Amazon.com's Bestseller lists for the past six weeks. Currently the book ranks #3 in the category of Fundamentalism, #3 in Gender & Equality and #48 in Women's Studies. Pince-Nez Press, the book's publisher, says that the surge in sales likely is attributed to the Warren Jeff's trial and conviction and the polygamist past of presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. "People are interested in all aspects of polygamy, especially learning about it from people who have left," says Susan Vogel, Publisher. God's Brothel has received worldwide attention, including feature articles in the UK's The Guardian, and Germany's der Spiegel, and author appearances on CNN and Fox. Mormonism with a twist! Celebrate the endearing idiosyncrasies of the land of Zion with the authors of the Sugar Beet, the online satirical newsletter that is now a book!
Christopher Bigelow Kimball and Paul Browning appeared on Park City TV on October 24!
Release Party: Thursday, November 16, at 7 p.m. at Sam Weller's Zion Bookstore, 354 So. Main Street, SLC This party included a surprise appearance of a Utah Valley housewife who grabbed the microphone to complain about stereotypes. Well, okay, it was one of our (unnamed, male) authors in a wig and apron. The food competition was stiff and the winners deserving. The Browning family won the jello competition with a heinous- colored jello brain. Made of kiwi flavored jello it actually tasted good if you could get past the fact that you were eating a brain. The yummy selection of funeral potatoes were going to be tough to judge until the appearance of a mystery casserole submission arriving in a padded, thermal pack with a calligraphed label and a sterling silver server. Maybe a bit fancy for a Mormon buffet, but author Eric Samuelson deemed cookbook author Marguerite Henderson's chicken casserole the overwhelming winner. Marguerite won a trip to Moab!
