“This is a great little book about a surfer from California on a C.I.A. tour of duty in Indonesia who is really just looking for waves and chicks.” — Water magazine

Gus, a young surfer from California, finishes his training with the C.I.A. just before the U.S. enters war with Iraq under the first President Bush. He is sent to Indonesia, the most populous Muslin country in the world and a center for radical Islam. Fair enough, thinks Gus, the surfing is supposed to be the best in the world.

While Gus sinks comfortably into surfing and the bar scene in Jakarta, he is a fish out of water at work—a surfer among golfers, a rocker in a crowd of Lawrence Welk country clubbers. But is is determined to complete a successful tour—even if he has to disguise himself as a Brazilian playboy in order to recruit an Iraqi as a spy.

If you like guys’ adventure and the lure of surfing, you’ll enjoy Surfing the C.I.A.
